Tails of Iron Review friv game – A Classic Adventure with No Surprises

The atmospheric adventure Tales of Iron opens the doors of the Rat Kingdom to gamers, which is going through hard times - the king has fallen, the enemies have come too close, and all hope for salvation lies with the young heir to the throne. The developers at Friv2Online Games Studio gave us a true classic in 2021 with no surprises. For some, this is great news, while others may be a little upset - I tell you why in my review.

Just as I returned from the city of Dawn, where I witnessed a bloody war between anthropomorphic animals, as Tails of Iron again throws me into a fictional world where people do not dominate at all.

The setting of this game was the fantasy Middle Ages, in which warlike mice are represented as good-natured people, and vile frogs as villains. Their next conflict became the starting point for the young Prince Reggie, for whom we have to play.

The plot in Tails of Iron comes first, and the friv game itself turns into a kind of fairy tale - this feeling arose for me because the voice-over of the actor Doug Cockle, who voiced Geralt of Rivia in the English dub of The Witcher 3, accompanies the whole story. He comments almost every step of our hero, describing his experiences and actions - mice can't talk, can they? We can learn about the topics of the dialogues of these little warriors only by pretty pictures in pop-up windows.

At its core, Tails of Iron is a classic adventure with light RPG elements and a Dark Souls-style combat system. All the hard work of the new king is dumped on us - we need to restore the kingdom, find the missing brothers and take revenge on the leader of the frogs, who dared to invade Reggie's house. All this is presented in the form of linear missions, but sometimes they give a break from the plot in rare secondary quests.

Progress in the story is reflected in the world - for example, the premises of the castle are restored and play with gold, and life begins to flourish again in the surrounding territories. For me, this is without a doubt a huge plus.

The Rat Kingdom itself is divided into 6 interconnected locations, through which we have to travel. Here is the castle itself, and gloomy swamps, and an underground crypt, and terrible caves - I note that they are worked out soundly and quickly recreate the atmosphere of a place in which something terrible has just happened. Locations are linear and only occasionally hide surprises.

Wherever Reggie goes, enemies will be waiting for him - frogs, bugs, giant worms, mosquitoes and even zombie toads. Not without massive bosses. There are actually few types of enemies, but they are never boring, since the combat system was based on the ideas of Dark Souls.

Each fight here is difficult in its own way, since the opponents are able to kill the mouse with two attacks. This forces you to often use a shield, counterattacks and rolls, and in the process of the battle itself, carefully study the attacks of the enemy and quickly respond to his intentions. I singled out the damage system as an advantage for myself - there are no damage numbers and a life bar for enemies above their heads (except for bosses), so you have to judge their condition by their appearance.

Despite the complexity, Tails of Iron does not try to piss off the gamer like Dark Souls. Battles are difficult, but saves are frequent, there is no annoying stamina system, and in general, death does not incur any penalties. In some missions, the hero is helped by his friends, even if their contribution is minimal. True, if you forgot to save, then write wasted.

In addition, on the journey, Reggie turns from a frightened prince into a real king. It was not without reason that I said that Light role-playing elements were implemented in Tails of Iron - there is no pumping here, and new equipment helps our hero gain strength.

There is quite a lot of it here - helmets, chest armor and shields are divided into light, medium and heavy, and among the weapons you will find swords, spears, axes, crossbows, bows and even firearms.

The described feature, in my opinion, has two sides. On the one hand, nothing distracts us in the adventure, does not force us to grind, and the one with straight arms comes out the winner from the battle. On the other hand, you can run through enemies, it quickly gets boring to collect consumables ( there is no crafting ), and a ton of loot simply falls into the “reserve” and remains there if better equipment was found. The developers diversified the armor, screwing resistance to various types of enemies to it, but did not come up with other interesting properties.

Another plus I think is a charming picture and quite responsive controls. The animations of the hero turned out to be smooth, and there are even spectacular finishing moves of enemies. There is a lack of catchy music that would make this adventure even more fun. As for the technical side, I observed small FPS drawdowns and caught one bug due to which the friv game “closed”, but in general, the impressions of the optimization are positive.

It can be seen that the authors of Tails of Iron are afraid of experiments, even small ones - for example, it would be possible to make a phased restoration of the castle for the collected resources (they do not play a special role), add interesting effects to weapons, hide more secrets and diversify secondary quests (they, unfortunately, turned out to be identical).

But these are just wishes - without them, Tails of Iron is practically nothing to scold. This is an atmospheric, classic adventure with a complex but fair combat system and a fascinating story that you can't stop following until the very end. I am sure that the world is missing such games that do not try to jump above their heads and offer quite understandable and simple gameplay that gamers of all ages and walks of life will enjoy. I recommend.
